The Town of Charlotte, chartered in 1762, is set on a series of hills and
ridges overlooking Lake Champlain, not far south of Burlington. According to
Vermont Magazine, Charlotte, with its 3,381 residents, shoulders " its way
between the glitzy refinement of Shelburne to the north and the blue-collar
panache of Ferrisburgh to the south, trying to find a happy medium between
the two extremes, and forging its own peculiar character in the process.
This is a town dominated by rural landscapes, by farmland, hills, and
orchard; it is also - quietly, to be sure - part and parcel of Vermont's
Gold Coast. Small farms and modest homes are here, as they have always been;
but they often sit cheek and jowl with more stately mansions."
"And why not? Why wouldn't people of every stripe and economic niche want to
live here? This is a town with multiple attractions; close enough to
Burlington for an easy commute, yet far enough to have escaped the
depredations of Shelburne Road; possessor of a strong community spirit,
reflected in excellent schools, a new town hall, and a handsome traditional
gathering place, the Old Brick Store; home to a broad range of artists,
farmers, writers, gardeners, sailors, and professionals."
